<![CDATA[<p>The Centre for the Comparative History of Print, University of Leeds, UK, in conjunction with the Brotherton Library, University of Leeds, has announced a seminar by Nicholas Barker FBA entitled <em>The Making of &ldquo;Printing and the Mind of Man&rdquo;</em>. This will take place in the Brotherton Room, Brotherton Library, University of Leeds, on Wednesday 15th May 2013, 4.30 pm to 6 pm. The seminar marks the fiftieth anniversary of this ground-breaking exhibition, which <em>inter alia</em> led to the founding of the Printing Historical Society.</p>]]>

<![CDATA[<p>The Institut d'histoire du livre in Lyon has announced its tenth Book History Workshop, to take place in Lyon, France, 24-27 June 2013. The programme includes three advanced courses in the field of book and printing history. These are:</p>

<ul><li><em>Introduction to the study of incunabula</em>, presented by Kristian Jensen (course in English)</li>
<li><em>Inexpensive European bindings with limp covers of paper and parchment from the 1470s to the 1830s</em>, presented by Nicholas Pickwoad (course in English)</li>
<li><em>The artist&rsquo;s book or how the book can change art (and not the inverse)</em>, presented by Anne M&oelig;glin-Delcroix and Fran&ccedil;oise Lonardoni (course in French)</li></ul>

<p>A fourth course, <em>An abridged history of occidental illuminated manuscripts through exploration of the collections in Lyon</em>, which was to have been presented by Marianne Besseyre, has unfortunately had to be cancelled.</p>

A full speaker programme includes presentations on engraving and printing for the juvenile novelty market, 1660&ndash;1825, and on Thomas Saint of Newcastle, &ldquo;bookseller, printer and pirate&rdquo;. <![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.hps.cam.ac.uk/people/kusukawa.html">Dr Sachiko Kusukawa</a>, Tutor and Fellow in History and Philosophy of Science at Trinity College, Cambridge, plans to conduct research into drawings and illustrations produced by the early Royal Society. Dr Kusukawa is looking for a curator or practitioner familiar with 17th century intaglio engraving and printing methods who would be willing to assist in practical application of these methods to the reconstruction of some scientific engravings (e.g. from Hooke's <em>Micrographia</em>), by engraving new plates and printing from them, in order to better understand the processes involved. <![CDATA[<p>The Centre for Urban History at the University of Leicester, UK, has announced a Book History Research Network Study Day on <em>Print and manuscript Cculture in British and European towns and cities</em>. Papers are invited for this interdisciplinary Study Day from postgraduates, independent researchers and established scholars working on medieval to modern Britain or Europe. Topics might include but are not limited to:</p>

<ul><li>Intersections between urban cultural history and the history of books/prints/manuscripts/images</li>
<li>How the culture of text or image has contributed to &ndash; and/or been shaped by &ndash; its primarily urban setting</li>
<li>Urban texts and images: their creation, production, distribution and consumption/reception</li>
<li>Popular print culture and &lsquo;street literature&rsquo; (ballads, chapbooks, broadsides etc.)</li>
<li>How texts and images disseminated urban ideas and culture into rural hinterlands</li>
<li>Reading the &lsquo;word city&rsquo; through newspapers, maps, posters, timetables and ephemeral texts/images</li>
<li>Representations of urban space or modernity in text or image; urban &lsquo;renaissance(s)&rsquo;</li>
<li>Innovative, radical and subversive uses of urban texts and images</li></ul>

<p>The day will include a talk and display of prints by Sarah Kirby, Artist in Residence, Centre for Urban History.</p>

<![CDATA[<p>The Birmingham Institute of Art and Design at Birmingham City University, UK, has announced its intention to award an Arts and Humanities Research Council Doctoral Studentship, to commence in October 2013. The award provdes support, including tuition fees and a maintenance grant, for between one and three years of full-time study, or between two and five years of part-time study, leading to a doctoral degree. Applications and enquiries are welcomed from well-qualified candidates wishing to pursue research that aligns with The Typographic Hub's areas of research strength.
